Flat roofs aren't actually flat — they're built with a shallow fall so water runs off toward an outlet or gutter, and most flat-roof problems trace back to that fall being inadequate or a membrane fault stopping water reaching it properly. Felt, EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass all fail in slightly different ways: felt can blister, split or lift at the laps between sheets as it ages; EPDM can puncture or come away from its adhesive at the edges and upstands; GRP can crack if the roof structure beneath it flexes. Ponding — water sitting in a low spot rather than draining away — is a genuine warning sign on any flat roof, because standing water accelerates whatever degradation the membrane is already showing and adds ongoing weight and UV exposure to one concentrated area. Upstands, where the flat roof meets a wall or parapet, are also a common leak point, since the membrane has to be properly dressed and sealed up the vertical surface, not just laid flat and stopped at the edge.
